Troubleshooting Guide: Discount Not Applying During POS Transactions

If a discount or promotion isn’t applying during a Point of Sale (POS) checkout, don’t worry — this guide will help you identify and fix the issue quickly.

⚙️ 1. Verify the Discount Setup

Before troubleshooting the POS terminal, confirm that:

  • The discount or promo code is active and not expired.

  • The discount has been properly created and synced with your POS system.

  • The discount type (percentage, fixed amount, or product-specific) matches what’s being applied at checkout.

  • The discount visibility is enabled for POS use — some discounts may be set for online orders only.

💡 Tip: Check your Discounts or Promotions settings in your Admin Dashboard to confirm POS eligibility.


🛒 2. Confirm Item & Cart Eligibility

Not all discounts apply to every item or combination of items. Double-check that:

  • The item(s) scanned match the products or collections included in the discount.

  • The cart meets any minimum purchase requirements (e.g., “Spend $50 or more”).

  • The discount isn’t restricted to specific customers or customer groups.

  • Excluded items (e.g., sale or clearance items) aren’t blocking the discount from applying.


💰 3. Check for Conflicting Discounts

Your POS may allow only one discount per transaction or per item. If another promotion or automatic discount is active:

  • The system may automatically apply the highest-value discount.

  • Manual entry of a second discount could be rejected.

⚠️ Remove any existing automatic discount first, then reapply the intended one.


🔐 4. Verify User Permissions

If you or your team can’t apply discounts at checkout:

  • Make sure your user role has the correct permissions to apply manual discounts.

  • Check if the POS is in offline mode — some promotions may only work when connected to the main server or network.


🔄 5. Sync or Refresh the POS System

If the discount was recently created or updated:

  • Perform a manual sync or refresh your POS to pull the latest promotions.

  • Restart the POS application if needed.

  • Confirm your device is connected to the internet to ensure discount data is updated.


🧹 6. Try a Manual Discount Entry

If the discount code still doesn’t apply automatically:

  • Try manually entering the discount code at checkout (if permitted).

  • Double-check spelling, case sensitivity, and any special characters.

  1. Take note of:

    • The discount code name or ID

    • Item(s) in the transaction
